it's also a good way to learn moving around in a 3d space. eastshade has a trifle more puzzle solving than ethan carter, but it has the same relaxed attitude to playing the game: there's no time constraints, you can just take your time and explore the island and there's lots of beautiful scenery and fun people to get to know. however, it is also not at all a comedy and the ending is pretty miserable.Īs a follow-on - if you like that style of adventure, then the step up from that which i LOVE is eastshade. it's got quite beautiful and lush graphics and has good sound design, too. ethan carter's more of a walking simulator and less of an adventure game, but if you're at all interested in 3d adventure games, then i think this is a good game to start with, because it'll teach you the fundamentals of using, say, a controller to navigate those spaces. The second is the vanishing of ethan carter. loom IS NOT a comedy-style adventure, but it has a lot of heart and it is very beautiful, even to this day. loom is short, was built expressly as an introductory experience and has a great setup and world for it's story. If you're looking for games to help you ease into the genre, i'd like to suggest two games - neither of them is very comedic, but they're games that introduce the ideas of adventure games pretty well: i don't want to veer into spoilers, but i think that the game will have far more impact that way. However, if you MUST play it, then play the BOY'S story first. there's one AWFUL puzzle midway through that you might have to consult a walkthrough for, but the rest have clear pathways through them. the puzzles are fairly logical and the self-generated hype for it is grossly overblown.Īs a starting point for the genre? i think it's a reasonable place to begin playing adventure games, given it's logical puzzles. if you were expecting monkey island/day of the tentacle style greatness, temper your enthusiasm. tim burned a whole lot of his bridges over the last few years, with me and so i have something of a bias against his work and this game in particular.
